Down Memory Lane: SBC dramas!

I bet many of us grew up watching mediacorp dramas. Then known as the SBC, it was 2 decades ago.

There was not much to watch on TV then, and I was just a kid. We were mostly kids then. Just this evening, there was a trip down memory lane as mediacorp celebrates its 25 years of drama in chinese television. Those who watched the program might feel abit for it. I teared at some parts, mostly at memories.

I thought it would be meaningful and fun to look at some of the memorable works that have accompanied us in our growing up years. Beware of goosebumps... here goes!

When the ahhh-haaaahhhhh comes out, you'd instantly know what show this is.

The first ever Star Search in 1988 produced 3 promising newbies - Zoe Tay, Aileen Tan and Jazreel Low. This is their first serial since winning the awards. Title? My Fair Ladies.

Another song we can't forget. A name we remembered till now: BOBO!
"Pretty Faces": As we all know, this is the show that catapulted Zoe Tay into instant stardom. Along with Lin Meijiao and Tang Miaoling, this 30-parter shows how Bobo (played by Zoe) tears her best friend's life apart by stealing the latter's boyfriend and *gasp* her father, and then causing her mother's death.

And some shows we vaguely remember..

Five Foot Way: It represents the width of a common corridor of a shophouse.

Before Starbucks came to Singapore:

We also had our very own E.T. (Remember how she parted her fingers into V-signs? I tried to do that after watching the show!):

Someone asked on youtube if this could KO Royston Tan's 881:

To celebrate SEA Games:

Bet you remember the song.

And then the one song that everyone can sing... And that one-liner we all know: Aiyoyo!

This one by Zhou Chuming, his first drama.

And this.. the SCARIEST show I've ever watched. MI LI YE! Traumatising me when I was a mere three year old. Bc of this show, I could not sleep at night. I cant even go to the bathroom by myself. I bet many of you remember and feel the same way? Check out the second clip. I still remember this episode now!

Then there was the famous Shuang Tian Zi Zun, that had all of us practising how to deck cards.

Aiyoyo Version 2a:

Its closing theme:

The Chen Hanwei craze, people always singing this song on excursions or year end ceremonies:

During the same era, we saw the emergence of Fann Wong:

The show you'd try to act out the ending part:

Still Fann Wong:

Another spooky show by Fann Wong (Also starring Thomas Ong, who was always paired with her during this time):

An epic. One show your teachers would encourage you to watch. Mine did!

The oriental version of X-men!

I was hooked to this show.

One of my favourites bc it was the one show that dealt with past lives and vampires.

So, how was that for some reminiscence? Were there any more shows that you remembered bc of this post? Share with us!

Ending with a surprise:

Chery for suggesting could do a feature on this. Thanks gal!

wow, though i missed the star awards, i thought it was nice try on mediacorp's part to remind us how it grew up with us. i guess most of us really liked the shows in the past, because there wasnt much of a choice. since we're not exposed to many other channels - think scv came much later. what i think went wrong with the recent mediacorp dramas is scriptwriters trying to imitate the overseas - the sappy korean, japanese or even the whiny taiwanese. and its prolly made worse that we're now so exposed to media - think internet -youtube and tudou, that it somehow made local dramas appear even more substandard. just look at comedy night, how we used to find liang si mei endearing, but in its later years, it became a copycat of taiwanese variety shows.

anyway, before my pledge of loyalty to hk drama serials, i remembered loving the fann wong's stockbroking show - how my sis and i rave about ikea furniture after the show, and also that tennis show - really liked it then, but thinking back, the ridiculous tennis techniques are enough to make me cringe!

ha, those were the days!
